a. The Evolution of Service Engineering: Perspectives, Architecture and Methods

The presentation was given by Dr. Gerhard Gudergan; it focused on the evolution of service engineering up to IPS² and their characterization. Finally he pointed out that IPS² as solution systems are characterized by various innovations, e.g. regarding corporate change, management of interdependencies and integrated organizational models.

b. Product Service System : Breaking the links between Economical Development and Environmental Degradation

Dr. Shahin Rahimifard provided an insight into the development and the prospects of IPS² by presenting a case study. Within this study especially the benefits from an IPS²-based sustainable product usage were examined.

c. Environmental benefits of functional economy

Prof. Daniel Brissaud presented a study of four cases of functional economy, i.e. substitution of supplying a good by providing a service. He focused on the environmental benefits gained incidentally by these new business models.

Open discussion on the IPS2 Keynote

Prof. Meier presented the current status of the keynote paper, its outline and the registered contributors. He also asked all participants to send in past and running research projects on the IPS² topic as well as further case studies and data on the market development until end of February, to include them in the keynote paper. Until end of February the remaining registered contributors should send in abstracts detailing their potential contribution. Based on all these contributions a first keynote paper version for the General Assembly 2009 in Boston will be prepared by the authors.

CIRP ISP2 Conference and Spring School 2010: selection of hosts

The 2010 Spring School on IPS² will take place in Grenoble; the 2011 Spring School in Kaiserslautern. The selection of hosts for the second conference on IPS² was postponed till mid of April. Based on the experiences of the first conference it will be decided whether to link the IPS² conference to another CIRP conference (e.g. Design, MS, LCE) or it will be set up as an individual conference. Up to now Aachen and Linköping have committed their interest to host the 2010 IPS² conference.
